Chipboard and other board materials must be coated with veneer or laminated for functional and aesthetic reasons. This is a task for the veneer press. However, simple veneer presses can only process a single workpiece. This is where the multi-platen press comes in. Depending on the type, multi-platen presses coat many panels simultaneously. Therefore, they are preferably used in the series production of furniture. Heat and pressure activate the adhesive and ensure a bubble-free veneer application over a wide surface area. Surplex ensures that you can buy first-class used multi-platen presses at favourable conditions.

A multi-platen press is a production machine that is used to coat board materials. With this machine, chipboards can be efficiently furnished with veneer technology. The name of the multi-platen press comes of from its multi-layered design. This machine allows for the simultaneous manufacturing of several coated chipboards. The panels are stacked above one another, on different levels of the machine.

A multi-platen press is made out of a stud frame, where several tables are arranged on top of one another. Slabs that have been coated in veneer are placed into the press. The tables then press down on one another and inflict a high amount of pressure on the slabs. While this occurs, the tables warm up, which increases the speed at which the veneer sets. Normal veneer presses operate following the same principle, but can only work on one slab at a time. Multi-platen presses are hydraulically operated. The lifting of the press and the warm press processes needs some time; the simple veneer press is not suitable for mass production. The advantage of the platen press is that several products can be worked on at once.

In most cases, multi-platen presses are automatically loaded. This is generally faster and minimises waste, which could otherwise occur through careless handling of the product. The installation and maintenance of presses should be done by trained industrial mechanics. Pressure, temperature and pressing duration has to be equally set up for all materials. This is also important for chipboards, as well as the used binding agent and the used veneer. Setting it up wrong could lead to a high amount of waste. Just like all woodworking machines, a multi-platen press requires a daily inspection and cleaning process. Hydraulic machines work using oil, which flow through high pressured tubes. Due to the risk of leaking, these tubes have to be regularly inspected with high-pressure hydraulic oil. This is even more important for the production of machines that work with sensitive products such as chipboards. Damages on the press table can be transferred onto the final product. A multi-platen press works particularly efficiently when combined with other machines.

The automatic loading using a feedback system or loading robot allows for high production rates. These presses should work in a chip-free environment. If this is not possible, then the machine should be enclosed. A permanent air stream can be used for the transportation of potential chippings.

Several companies have specialised in the manufacturing of multi-platen presses. Some of the most recommended suppliers include BÜRKLE, FRITZ, KIRCHFELD, JOOS and BECK.
