What is a horizontal band saw?

Horizontal band saws are industrial machines used for the horizontal separation of block-shaped objects. A horizontal band saw is most efficient when it is continually being loaded; therefore, high-end horizontal band saws with high-quality saw bands have large workpiece-processing capacities. The horizontal band saw has a rotating saw blade on a belt or band, along which the workpiece is guided and eventually separated. The horizontal bandsaw is operated using an electric motor and held together using tension. Horizontal band saws are distinctive due to their quiet operation, simple maintenance, and level and even cutting results. The used cutting material is usually relatively cheap and easy to change. Metal-cutting horizontal bandsaws are often equipped with brushes or brushwheels in order to stop chips from getting stuck in the blade's teeth. Through the thin-walled sheet and the continual rotary movement, there is permanent cooling of the sheet; the coolant washes the swarf away and maintains the blade lubricated and cool. Band saws for industrial metal-cutting use (for instance, for structural steel or bar stock) are available in horizontal and vertical design. Horizontal band saws are available in a large variety of forms. The usual band speeds vary from 40 feet per minute to 5,000 feet per minute, but there are also specialized horizontal band saws with band speeds of up to 15,000 feet per minute, specifically built for friction-cutting of hard metals. While small horizontal band saws can be manually loaded, big horizontal bandsaws are mainly stationary machines with very complex feeding and removal systems.

Since horizontal bandsaws are primarily used as a separation tool, taking care and attention to the safety regulations is extremely important when operating a horizontal bandsaw.
