Bevel gears (bevel wheel and pinion) are used to transmit angular rotary movements. For physical reasons, bevel gears must have a more robust design than other gears, and the number and width of the teeth must be calculated with the utmost precision. Once this is done, special milling machines (bevel gear manufacturing machines) come into play - often as part of an automated CNC production line, such as in the automotive industry. The bevel gear manufacturing machine can be used for spur, helical and spiral gearing (spiral bevel gear). Surplex can play an important role in your machine search. Here you will find used machines from GLEASON, HARBECK, WNC, KLINGELNBERG and other top manufacturers. Even with a recent year of construction!

A bevel gear is a variation of the conventional gearwheel. In contrast to the common gearwheel, the gear teeth are not located on the outer edge. A bevel wheel is a conically formed and has the teeth on the angled surface. As with conventional gearwheels, this serves the transfer of power, speed, and torque momentum.

Bevel gears transfer power, speed and momentum across an angle. A positive-lock power transfer can be executed within a defined area through a bevelled gear system. Generally, 90 degree angles are desirable. A bevel gear does not stand alone, but transfers its power, speed and torque to further corresponding bevel gears. One of the most common applications of bevel gears is in transferring the power differential to the rear axel in vehicles with rear-wheel drive.

  • Gear teeth are located on the angled side of the gearwheel
  • Power transfer through the angle

The construction of a bevel gear is more sophisticated than the torque momentum transfer between two normal gearwheels. A slight slippage of the bevel wheels in relation to one another always will result in a misplacement of breakdown torque and an increased point load on the tooth flanks. Therefore, several constructive measures attempt to limit the premature wear and tear of bevel gears. Bevel gears are intentionally more solidly designed than comparable conventional gears. They often utilize complex gear tooth shapes, especially bowed or S-shaped teeth, which prevent slippage but also complicate production. Bevel gears are principally produced on lathes or CNC-mills, but high volume mass-production through these means is not very efficient. A bevel gear production machine brings all the necessary production processes for the manufacture of bevel gears together. Machines specialised for the production of bevel gears are indispensable for the mass production of such gears.

A bevel gear manufacturing machine currently consists of an intake and a milling unit. In most cases the machining instruments require cooling lubricant. A bevel gear manufacturing machine can be outfitted with automated insertion and extraction machinery.

A bevel gear manufacturing machine is a system of mass-production. It is generally designed to enable the manual feeding and extraction of product through unskilled labour. Installation and assembly exclusively require skilled technicians. Machining processes cause subtle wear and tear on the tool, which become noticeable through slight changes in the product dimensions. Operators of a bevel gear manufacturing machine must be able to observe these changes. Training in quality control is therefore necessary for those working with bevel gear manufacturing machines.

Established suppliers of bevel gear manufacturing machines are FIAT, OERLIKON, KLINGENBERG, ZFTK and HERMLE.
