Electroplating is used to coat metal and plastic in order to optically improve the material, (e.g. gloss through chromium plating) or to functionally improve its surface properties (e.g. corrosion protection through zinc coating). In the electroplating machine, two metals - a cathode and an anode - are immersed in an electrolyte bath. When exposed to electric current, ions detach from the anode and deposit on the surface of the cathode. Complete electroplating machines are available also as used equipment. Thus at Surplex, you can buy at auction used machines as well as suitable systems.

Electroplating refers to the coating of workpieces with metal. With electroplating, all processes are summarised through the electrolytic thin layering of metal onto workpieces. Electroplating belongs to coating and finishing processes. It is used to enhance the aesthetic value of metal products or to make them more resistant against external elements.

During electroplating, a highly purified metal product is submerged into an acidic bath and mixed with an electrical current. Through the electrical current the desired coating metal, which is dissolved in the acidic bath, finds its way to the submerged metal workpiece and permanently sticks to it. The thickness of the coating layer is dependent on the voltage, for how long the workpiece is submerged and the amount of coating metal that is available.

One of the most used electroplating processes is galvanising. This is used, to provide ferrous materials with long-term protection against corrosion. Some of the most common products that this is used for are balcony railings, the bodies of automobiles or the containers of corrosive substances. Galvanised materials are usually not very visually attractive, which is why a second coating process (such as varnishing or powder coating) is usually conducted after the galvanising process.

Chrome plating is one of the processes used to increase visual attractiveness of a product. This is not only used for designing of the bodies of automobiles, but also for the sanitary and medical fields where armatures and items must be made easy to clean. To save costs, dishwashers, washing machines, driers and other white goods are now produced with chrome plated sheets rather than steel. Other processes include the anodising of aluminium and platinum plating.

Many processes that have to do with electroplating, for example chrome plating or gold plating, require time-consuming preparations on the workpieces that are due to be coated, especially intensive grinding and polishing processes. These can be executed by assistants. Electroplating machines emit a lot of harmful vapours. Therefore, a strong ventilation system is recommended for the area around the electroplating machine. Electroplating machines require a lot of space; in a plant it would usually take up an entire hall. Inputting and transporting systems ease the continual work of an electroplating system.
