Machining centers for automatic full cycle processing

Machining centres (Processing Centers) are numerically operated machine tools used to process workpieces with complex shapes. Machining centres are used for various cutting processes and therefore equipped with different tools, such as those used in milling machines and drilling machines. It is characteristic for a machining centre to run almost fully automatically, including the switching of tools and its movements.

  • High level of automatic processes
  • Independent switching of tools

CNC routers, for example, contain a main spindle that can load themselves from a tool magazine. A numerically controlled movement between the main spindle and the workpiece is possible on 3, 4 or 5 axes, sometimes even more. Additionally, a rotating movement axis is also available. Horizontal machining centres and vertical machining centres are differentiated by the positioning of the main spindle. If the position is interchangeable, then it is identified as a universal machining centre.

Characteristics for comparing machining centres are the number and type of numerically controlled axes, the tools in the magazine, the speed range, the power of the cut, the dimensions of the work table, the load-bearing capacity and the resolution power of the drive unit. Plate and chain magazines are used to save tools. In terms of the storage for tools, magazines are differentiated in terms of their form (star or drum). The direction can be parallel or perpendicular to the magazine axis. In order to reduce idle time when tools are being switched, machining centers can have single or double tool changer, which can simultaneous take a tool out of the magazine and from the main spindle. The time used for loading and unloading, as well as the clamping of the workpieces, can be reduced by using pallet systems. Here, workpieces are put onto pallets away from the workstation, and then they are transported by the machining centre. This means that the switching of tools can run parallel to the operation of the machining centre.

Detail of a used machining center

The development of a machining centre

The history of the machining centre lies with the existing numerical control (NC) of machine tools and the computer numerical control (CNC), as well as the development of the motorised spindle as an autonomous unit. Numerical control enables the automatic processing of workpieces. The motorised spindle contains a direct drive, which allows for precise control of the spindle movement, even at high speeds. Through the integrated tool magazine, the machining centre can contain several types of tools including, for example, drilling, milling and turning tools used in lathes in a single setup.

Where are machining centres used?

Because of the high levels of automation, machining centres are suitable for mass production. They are also suited for the production of small-scale and medium-sized series, as well as individual components. Mass production requires very high processing speeds. Therefore, machining centres are often found in large and small companies, from automobile manufacturers to carpenters workshops. They can be used both for metalworking and woodworking, where CNC machining centres are very popular.
