What do "welding machines" do?

Welding machines are used to permanently bond workpieces together. They are mainly used for the processing of metal, but plastic welding has now also been established. Welding machines work using a thermal melting process on two surfaces. The melting process is done either on a specific spot or along a seam on the workpieces' surfaces, and before it cools down and solidifies, it is pressed together using high pressure. This results in a permanent and substantial bond between the two workpieces. This can only be reversed if the workpiece is destructed. Other uses for welding are build-up welding or the closing up of holes. For these purposes, hand-held welding equipment is used instead of welding machines.

Where is a welding machine used?

There is a difference between welding machines and welding equipment. Welding equipment is a component of a welding machine, but is mobile and can also be used separately.
  • Used to permanently bond workpieces together
  • Mainly used for the processing of metal
  • Type and composition of a welding machine is usually determined by the thickness of the workpieces

Classic welding machines are stationary, as they are used for mass production and normally installed on a specific spot in a production line. The type and composition of a welding machine is usually determined by the thickness of the workpieces that it will be processing.

What types of welding processes are available?

There are a large variety of welding processes that differ in their application and the necessary qualifications needed. The simplest welding process is spot welding. This, and up to electrode or arc welding processes are used in the mass production of thin-walled metal products. Here, specially moulded pre-products are fixed onto the welding press, and with melt-flows are welded onto one another. A spot welding gun is used for big and complicated products, such as automobile bodies.

Combined with the use of industry robots, spot welding is a very efficient way to bond metal products together. In modern industrial settings, products are often produced fully automatically, but this can also be done by semi-skilled workers. Gas welding is a process where a base material is brought to melting point using an oxy-acetylene flame. At the same time, a filler rod is introduced that is continually being melted. This process is particularly useful for build-up welding to close up openings, unevenness or gaps in the material. It is also particularly good for the welding of cast iron. Gas shielded welding is, along with arc welding, the most widely used process. Through a continual emission of shielded gas, oxygen is prevented from reaching the welding spot, as that would result in burn holes. Gas shielded welding machines can either be hand-held or fully automatic machines. During this welding process, one can chose between using metal inert gas welding (MIG), metal active gas welding (MAG) or wolfram-inert-gas welding (WIG). Submerged arc welding is used for the processing of very thick-walled workpieces, for example large tubes or pipes. During this process a powder made out of iron oxide is put upon the welding spot instead of using a shielding gas.

This is a complicated process and should only be conducted by skilled workers with high qualification and experience levels. Generally, the submerged arc welding process contains very comprehensive quality control. During the different work steps, the fatigue strength of the welded seal is regularly checked.

Suppliers of welding machines

Simple spot welding machines are available for a few hundred euros and complex welding machines can cost more than ten thousand euros. Well-known manufacturers of welding machines are MESSER, ROTH, WALTER and KIEHNE.
