Manipulators are needed whenever heavy loads have to be moved from one station to the next. This is the case, for example, in the automotive industry, door and window production, foundries, etc. The model of every manipulator is the arm of an industrial robot, which is equipped either with a tool or a gripper as well as several rotary and thrust axes. In fact, every industrial robot is a manipulator, but not vice versa, as there are many manipulators that are operated manually. Surplex also auctions used manipulators even from a location near you.

The term "manipulator" refers to the visible part of a robot arm. Industrial robots are a large part of modern mass production processes. They are used to accurately undertake monotonous tasks, to move heavy loads and work in dangerous areas. Manipulators are different than industrial robots, because manipulators are manually controlled. Industrial robots can undertake their programmed actions over and over. However, every industrial robot also has the option to be controlled manually.

Manipulators are implemented in areas where humans cannot undertake the work or the working conditions would be too dangerous. There are a large variety of areas where remote-controlled robot arms can be implemented. They are commonly used in foundries, where they are used for positioning, loading and moving heavy moulds. Manipulators used in foundries or other areas of heavy industry are particularly massive and strong. Manipulators are also used for nuclear or laboratory technology where they handle dangerous materials or substances. There is no training required to handle a manipulator, but it is necessary to have extensive practise. Untrained workers could operate a manipulator if they are given enough time to learn the controlling mechanisms, otherwise this could be dangerous for both people and other machines. In terms of its movements, a manipulator is very similar to a digger. It is recommended to practice the controlling of these machines outdoors, before using them in a hall.

Manipulators can often be used again after thorough inspection and maintenance. The weak point of a manipulator are its bearings. They should be constantly monitored and replaced, if necessary. Heavy-duty manipulators are usually hydraulically operated. These must also be regularly inspected. There are a number of specialist companies focussed on manipulators, who can take used components and modify them to the level of cutting-edge technology. This is particularly the case with sensors. A used manipulator can be implemented for small or medium-sized factories to increase efficiency.

Recommended manufacturers of manipulators with several axles are ANDROMAT, ABB, DALMEC, FANUC, PANA ROBO, KUKA und MOTOMAN.
