Replacement parts help maintain the production precision of your lathe to the highest standard. Which lathe accessories are standard parts and what extra functions can be used with specialised accessories?
The turning tool plays a special role in lathe accessories. These lathe tools are on the one hand wear parts which require regular replacement. They also come in a range of shapes and materials, which are chosen based on the intended application.
Special turning tools may be required for making grooves or creating thread on the lathe. Simple turning tools made from high-speed steel have a lower lifespan than tools made from hard metal but they can be reground. Hard metal tools are also suitable for high cutting speeds, which particularly comes in handy for serial and mass production. This hard metal lathing accessory also consists mostly of tool steel and only one cutting edge made of hard metal is used. These can either be soldered on or screwed on to enable it to be easily changed. Oxide ceramics and diamonds are also used as cutting materials for special applications. Ceramic is even harder and more heat-resistant than hard metal and is thus suitable for very high cutting speeds. Diamond is often used for the fine machining of non-ferrous metals at very high speeds.
The most important lathe accessories are the power clamping chuck, which sits on the drive spindle and introduces the torque into the workpiece, as well as the lathe centre in the opposite tailstock. In mechanic’s lathes, the lathe centre, which is rotatably mounted or spring loaded in rolling bearings, is located in the quill of the tailstock with a Morse taper. It can also be replaced with other lathe accessories for special production series, such as a drill chuck, which is a frequent choice. This enables the production of central bore holes and is used in particular in the manufacture of centering bores into which the lathe centre latches when rotated. Special centre drills are another form of standard accessories for lathes. These produce the complex geometry of a centering hole as per DIN 332 within a single operation.
There are two reasons for using specialist lathe accessories. The first is that they increase production accuracy and the second is that they are indispensable in manufacturing particular workpiece geometries. Steady rests provide addition support for long, slender turning parts. Rotary mandrels enable the clamping of hollow parts.
Replacement parts for lathes and turning machines are primarily required to restore the precision of the machinery which has been impaired through wear and tear. This is particularly useful for drive spindles bearings and for adjusting spindles.
