KASTO BSM 170/220 Hacksaw

A power hacksaw is used to cut large sections of steel and other metals. Since it is very difficult to cut diameters larger than 10/15mm with a regular hand-held hacksaw, power hacksaws are used to perform such difficult and time-consuming processes. Although the hand-operated hacksaw has a really long history, with the start of industrial manufacturing and the development of the first machine factories, the operation methods of hacksaws were transformed, so that they could be propelled using the transmission of a steam-engine.

  • Separation of materials
  • Minimum loss of material due to a slim sawing blade
  • Main areas of application are in the machine and steel construction industries

Later on, the electric hacksaw was introduced and then transformed into a fully automatic piece of equipment. Nowadays, a power hacksaw can be used to saw almost all types of materials.

A power hacksaw consists of a fixed sawing blade, available in a variety of lengths, which is held in place using tension from the saw's frame. The actual saw frame is very robust and mounted on one side. This frame can be moved in a push or pull stroke, used for the removal of material.

Hacksaw in operation

It directs the movement of the power hacksaw, and when undertaking the opposite movement of the cutting direction, the blade raises slightly. The fixed-in sawing blade is very slim, the advantage of which is the fact that there is minimal loss of material during the sawing process. An electric hacksaw is mounted on the base made out of cast steel or cast iron, which contains all the driving mechanics. The workpiece is placed on a sawing table, upon which there is a hydraulically or pneumatically controlled hand-operated vise. The height of the workpiece feed is adjusted to fit the height of the saw blade, according to the set dimensions of each cutting stroke. In addition, the height of the workpiece is limited to the height of the frame. With some industrial power hacksaw machines, steel bars are usually clamped into the vise, while a stop unit allows for repetition in the linear dimension.

The power hacksaw is used throughout industry for the cutting of a wide range of materials. Power hacksaws are most commonly used in the machine and steel construction industries, where the necessary materials for production (usually in the form of bars) are cut into the desired length. When doing so, it is important to choose materials the dimensions of which are larger than the desired dimensions of the workpiece.

Therefore, the workpiece can be processed with the electric hacksaw into the desired length and then adjusted during the final stages with precision machines such as lathes or milling machines. For the cutting of steel, a cooling device is used to continually cool the sawing blade and the workpiece. One particular example of the application of power hacksaws is the sawing of steel for trapezoidal screws. Using an electric hacksaw, they are cut to the length required for their use in most machines. After the hardening of the workpiece, precision machines are used for the finishing grinding stages of the threads, cutting the threads and processing the surfaces as required.
