Production of metallic workpieces with metalworking machinery

Metalworking and processing encompass the whole range of manufacturing processes used for producing geometrically exact items from metal. This includes primary moulding processes to give the metal its initial shape, further forming processes to alter the shape, separation methods to break down a larger part into its constituent parts and joining techniques or form an overall product from these parts. Coating procedures can also be used to apply an adhesive coating to metallic workpieces using an unformed material, as well as procedures for changing material properties, such as curing and tempering.

  • Covers all production techniques for metallic items
  • Includes primary shaping, reforming, separation and joining, coating, and material-changing processes

A range of specific machine tools are used for the various manufacturing techniques, which enable individual metalworking tools to be used for several procedures. This is particularly useful for reforming and separation procedures.

From copper saws to sheet metal processing centres

Historically speaking, the start of metal processing marked the end of the first prehistoric period in human development – the stone age. This transition, however, was not abrupt and developed in a variety of ways across many regions. For example, the typical method by which the bronze and iron age are separated does not apply in northern Scandinavia and in Egypt, where metalworking commenced a few centuries ahead of Central Europe. Even back in Ancient Egypt there was knowledge of the fundamental metalworking techniques. They used scraping, sawing and drilling, and also developed the first lathes and machinery for soldering and welding metals.

Used metalworking machine for special kinds of turning

A common feature of the historical development of metalworking is that soft metals were first processed, including copper, tin and lead, but mainly gold and silver. The first more durable tools arose later as alloys using copper and tin were developed into resilient bronze. In the early- to mid-phase of the bronze age, metals were only shaped using mould casting. As the epoch continued, the development of forging technology coincided with increasing iron processing, which was made into semi-finished products in the form of hollow moulds and then forged. This division of processing steps into pre-forming and forming is also of great importance for the processing of metal in the modern age. Most metal processing machine tools served to reshape, separate and join together workpieces, which is reflected in the relevant set of standards. Of the manufacturing procedures defined in DIN 8580, only pre-forming, separating and joining processes are further differentiated in additional standards.

Metalworking Today

Modern-day metalworking is characterised by an increasing level of automation. Fully-automated metalworking machines for pre-shaping, separating and joining provide benefits which can be achieved through producing mouldings by casting – a short distance from the raw material to the finished part and the relatively high level of freedom in shaping. Automation also accelerates production capacity, primarily through reducing non-productive times. The NC machine continues to work on the next part during offline programming. The machining centre for CNC metalworking reduces the time needed for switching tools. The cell’s workpiece storage generally enables workpieces to be replaced while processing is still ongoing. Finally, flexible production systems and transfer lines can fully automate the workpiece flow – from the raw material to the finished part.

Used metalworking machine for large workpieces

Areas of application for metalworking machinery

Metalworking is an important process thanks to its relatively high level of shaping freedom with respect to the workpieces, as well as the highly changeable material properties, such as hardness, robustness, resistance to temperature and chemicals, the option of achieving homogeneity, as well as deliberate inhomogeneity with respect to the part produced from metal. Metal shares some of these properties with plastics, but it is its increased strength which makes it stand apart. As a result, metalworking is used in all areas of industrial and artisanal production.

Types of metalworking machinery

Metal processing equipment differs in its degree of specialisation. Single-purpose machines, such as gear-grinding machines, crankshaft milling machines and screwhead tenoning machines are each only suited to a specific processing task. Single machines generally only perform one production process but may also provide for other alternatives. Lathes or milling machines, for example, can be used both for the milling of metals as well as drilling. Other examples of individual machines include table-type boring mills, honing machines used for finely processing surfaces, plate shear machines for cutting through plates and other semi-finished products, plasma- and oxy-fuel cutting machines, start hole erosion machines, or painting systems. The word component “processing” in the title indicates that a machine tool has been designed for several production processes, as is the case in a “processing centre”.

Buying and selling used metalworking equipment online

There is a large range of used metalworking machinery available for sale on the market. Used metalworking machinery can be separated into two categories: separating machines and deforming machines. Used metalworking machinery for separating includes: lathes, saws, as well as machines for milling, punching, shearing, planing and drilling. Deforming metal processing machinery includes presses, round bending benches and all types of machines for bending.

Metalworking machines are highly resilient production equipment. In any case, they must load a metal blank at least as far as its yield point, and in the case of separating processes; up to tensile strength as well. Consequently, these are industrial machines which are capable of withstanding high stress levels. However, this is often not to be seen on second-hand machines. Wear and tear on metalworking equipment is generally to be found in the guidance mechanisms and bearings. Machines which have been used may appear very worn, but they remain fully unusable provided they have been well maintained. Metal processing equipment which has been given a fresh lick of paint, on the other hand, may be so worn on the inside that it would not be worth overhauling them. During a visual inspection, attention should not just be given to external appearances, but rather should focus on the inner workings of the machine, including the areas and individual parts which have been well used. This especially applies to milling machines. Used CNC machines for metalworking will have experienced strain on the spindles’ guidance axes for many years. Without thorough inspection, including production of a sample piece, it will not be possible to ascertain the maximum tolerances to which a second-hand CNC metalworking machine is capable of working.

The importance of consultation

As a result, it is always a good idea to contact a dealer specialising in used metalworking equipment. They will be able to provide reliable expertise and warranty services if requested. Acquiring a metalworking machine is a large investment, even when second-hand, and needs to be installed and run in until the desired performance is achieved. As such, used metalworking machinery should not be purchased without first making detailed enquiries. Surplex is a dealer in metal- and woodworking machinery and has many years of experience in trading metalworking machines from the second-hand market and has thousands of satisfied customers on its books. Surplex is the largest and most successful used machinery dealer on the market for the fields of metal- and woodworking. Surplex’s great selection, top service and high-quality metalworking machines leave nothing to be desired.

The range of manufacturers on offer is also as large as the selection of metalworking machines itself and means we can offer machines for every field of application. The most well-known and recommended companies include ACIERA, ALZMETALL, AMADA, DECKEL, DMG MORI, BEHRINGER, ELU, EMCO, HELLER, HAAS, HERMLE, HURON, KALTENBACH, KASTO, MAZAK, MESSER GRIESHEIM, INDEX and WABECO.

These and many other manufacturers of high-quality machines can regularly be found for sale in our used machinery marketplace, or in a range of auctions. Do not hesitate to contact Surplex Customer Care if you have any questions. Here, you will have access to an expert member of staff who can provide you with information and advice at any time.
