Processing metal workpieces through metalworking machinery

Metalworking encompasses all manufacturing processes used for the production of specific geometric bodies made out of metal. This includes: forming processes, that first give the metal a shape; reforming, which change the shape of a metal workpiece; separating and jointing processes, that can transform one large piece into many individual pieces or join many individual pieces together; coating processes, that coat a metal workpiece with a firmly adhering layer; and processes that change the characteristics of the material such as hardening and tempering.

  • Includes all production processes conducted on metal workpieces
  • Such as forming, reforming, separating, joining, coating and processes used to change the characteristics of a workpiece

Special metalworking machinery are required for all these various manufacturing processes. A single metalworking machine can conduct several different processes, and this is particularly the case with reforming or separating processes.

From the copper saw to sheet metal processing centres

Historically, the beginning of metalworking marked the end of the Stone Age. This transition was not so abrupt and occurred differently in the different regions. The classification of the Bronze and Iron Age is, for example, not applicable in northern Scandinavia and the metalworking in Egypt began a few centuries earlier than in Central Europe. The basic processes were already being used in Egypt in addition to shaving, sawing, drilling, turning, soldering and the welding of metals. One overarching similarity in the historical development of metalworking is that soft metals were initially processed, in addition to copper, tin, lead and particularly gold and silver.

The first stronger tools were then later developed and made out of copper-tin alloy to harden bronze. During the early and middle phases of the Bronze Age, the shaping of metal was done exclusively using castings. In the later phase, the further development of forging technology coincided with the additional processing of iron. This was processed into semi-finished products in a hollow form and then forged. This division of the manufacturing process in forming and reforming also has importance significance in metalworking industries today. Most of the machine tools for metalworking are used to reform, separate and join workpieces. This is also reflected in the corresponding standards. In the manufacturing processes defined by DIN 8580, only reforming, separating and joining processes are differentiated into additional standards.

Modern metalworking is characterised by its automatic processes. Fully automatic machine tools for reforming, separating and joining balance the advantages of manufacturing moulded parts through casting: a short processing time from raw material up to the finished product and the relatively large amount of freedom during moulding. Automatic processes reduce the time needed, primarily by reducing idle time. The NC-machines can process the next workpiece using an offline programme. A machining centre reduces the time for the switching of tools. The workpiece storage unit in the carriage allows for the workpiece to be switched parallel to processing. Flexible processing systems and automatic transportation systems ensure a full work flow, from raw material up to the finished product.

Where, and for what, are machine tools in metalworking used?

Metalworking is characterised by the comparatively free malleability of the workpieces, which is influenced by a large variety of material properties including hardness, toughness, temperature and chemical resistance, achievable homogeneity and also the intentional inhomogeneity of the finished metal pieces. Some of these characteristics are shared between metals and plastics, but they are generally different, especially its high level of solidity. Metalworking is found in all areas of industrial production and handcrafts. Machine tools for metalworking differ from each other in terms of their degree of specialisation. Single purpose machines like gear grinding machines, the crankshaft milling machine or mortising machines are each made to undertake a specific task. Single purpose machines only undertake one specific process, or can act as a support for other processes. The milling machines can, for example, also be used with the lathe.

Further examples of single purpose machines include the drilling machine, honing machine for surface treatment, shears for cutting sheet metal and other semi-finished products, flame cutter or a varnishing machine. The term "processing" implies that a machine tool is constructed to undertake several manufacturing processes, which is the case with machining centres.
