A panel saw (or panel-sizing saw) is a woodworking machine used to make dimensionally-accurate, linear and parallel cuts into boards and panels made from wood and non-ferrous metals. Composite materials, fibre boards or special materials can also be cut to size using a suitable saw blade. The saw unit in a panel saw is mounted to a slide, which is led crosswise across a panel using portal guidance.

Different designs for the same application
Panel-cutting saws are available in a vertical or horizontal design. Horizontal panel saws are primarily used in the furniture-making industry. Lifting tables are the ideal way of feeding in materials when using a horizontal panel saw and allow large quantities of panels to be quickly processed in the desired method. A vertically-designed panel saw, on the other hand, is mostly of interest to joineries and DIY stores. The main advantage of a vertical panel saw is the greatly reduced need for installation space. The choice of whether to use a vertical or horizontal panel saw is thus mainly based on local circumstances in production. A horizontal panel saw is also termed ‘recumbent’ and a vertical version can also be referred to as an ‘upright’ panel saw. Depending on the type of machinery, saw unit controls and material feeding can be manual or automatic. What is a panel saw used for? Vertical or horizontal panel saws are a wise choice if you frequently need to process and cut large quantities of material with a high level of accuracy. For smaller quantities, a movable or stationary table saw would be a better choice. Joineries and furniture manufacturers use panel saws in the first production steps to cut down large panels made from wood materials, such as plywood, chipboard, medium-density fibre board (MDF), oriented strand board (OSB), high density fibre board (HDF) into small, right-angled offcuts. The panel material is either manually inserted into the machine from the outside, or automatically via a lift table on the rear side of the machine. Depending on how the machine is configured, individual straight or mitred cuts are possible with a 3mm thick saw blade, or up to 8cm using a stack of saw blades.
Buying a second-hand panel saw
Buying a used panel saw is not a critical decision. Panel saws feature a range of characteristics, which make them ideal as second-hand machinery: they are only produced by well-known manufacturers who have long been known for their high quality. The panel sawing process does not entail an excessive level of wear and tear, which means that even second-hand panel saws are generally easy to maintain and the parts which may require replacement are mostly in easy-to-reach areas. This primarily applies to small woodworking panel saws and panel saws with a small quantity of electronics. A CNC panel saw, on the other hand, is more prone to wear and tear due to increased technical complexity. However, even a used panel saw machine with modern equipment is generally easy to overhaul.
